How many bricks per square metre?
A UK standard brick is 215 mm long and 65 mm high. With a 10 mm mortar joint each brick covers 225 × 75 mm of wall face, which is 0.016875 m². That gives about 59.3 bricks per m² for a half-brick (single-skin) wall, usually rounded up to 60. A one-brick-thick wall needs twice as many.
Waste
Allow extra for cuts and breakages. The waste figure you enter is added to both bricks and mortar.
